I began my love affair with Bond at the same time Sam Mendes did: Live and Let Die. We’re of the same generation, him and I, and couldn’t be further apart in lives, but this one thread ties us together. When I saw Skyfall for the first time, there was one scene that leapt out at me for being a true evolution of the genre, and made me realise that actually, the keys to the Aston Martin were in safe hands. It was nothing to do with M, or Moneypenny, but everything to do with how Mendes took Q and completely reinvented him with the unbelievably excellent Ben Whishaw making the part an accurate representation of where I’d stick the Branch at the start of the 21st Century.

Then Mendes ruined everything by sticking Moneypenny behind a desk. Having now seen Spectre? Nope, I won’t, so I’ll find my own means of fixing that in due course. What I knew is that’s not how I’d have ended it. I realised I had rather different ideas of where I’d send the franchise if I had the chance. That’s the great thing with words, you can make them do what you want as wish fulfilment when the real world disappoints you. That’s where the idea for Duet began, and why you’ve ended up here.

SPECTRE’s now in cinemas with two female characters who, I know, are not going to redefine what the franchise does with Bond’s women. Because, like it or not, espionage is still very much a man’s world. That’s not altered since Fleming wrote the novels, even Mr D. Craig Esq. has alluded in various interviews that he gets how utterly misogynist his pay cheque remains. I doubt that is going to change any time soon, and as a result I’m forced to create my own entertainment to prove that actually, there is an alternative. You just have to approach the idea in a different way.

Unabashed Inspiration 😀

Duet was started after I saw Skyfall for the first time, and took well over two years to bring to fruition. If this was an actual novel, I’d need to tease you with a Synopsis, so here’s a taste of what you’ll find archived here:

Veronica Ashby’s life is almost perfect, but there is one ambition that still eludes her. Ever since she can remember, Ronni’s wanted to be a spy. The current Civil Service job is a front for a shady world of espionage and intrigue, but it’s still not enough, and now Ronni has the chance to grasp the one designation she truly craves. To get there, everything must be sacrificed: can she survive the trials that Q Division will present, including provocation from the most dangerous 00 Agent of all…

In the end this story pretty much demanded to be written, and now it is, I’m going to stick it out into the World so I can get on with actually writing my own stuff. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope it proves the point that actually, you can take something traditional and give it a modern slant without losing the essence of what you begin with. That was my plan.

I hope I manage to hit the target at least once.

At the bottom of this page you’ll find a You Tube Playlist: this is annotated with links to which tracks relate to particular passages. I used music extensively not only as inspiration but also as source material to help realise and drive my narrative. I hope you find the choice a challenge and the connections between words and music entertaining.
